INTRODUCCIÓN
“Naranja” es el primer EP de Kalayawa publicado el 3 de Enero del año 2010. Incluye 4 temas con una mezcla de géneros como el Rock, Reggae, Latin, Folk y World con un estilo Psicodélico, Trip hop y Chamánico.
El disco refleja el viaje del chamán durante un día y una noche en la intemperie para elevar conciencia y adquirir sabiduría universal.
ORIGEN
“Naranja” es una metáfora del viaje del Puidei a través del Cerro Negro en Venezuela. Los Puidei ó Püddai son los chamanes del pueblo Kariña. Se llaman así los seres que poseen sabiduría y poder mágico para proteger, para curar y para adivinar. Pero para revelar esta sabiduría el Puidei deberá atravesar el Cerro Negro durante un día y una noche bajo la interperie. Solo así le serán confiados los secretos de la naturaleza.
Esta historia fue aprendida directamente de un Puidei durante el rodaje de la tesis documental “El río que nos atraviesa” de la cineasta Manuela Blanco el año 2009.
Para este tiempo Miguel Caroli había definido los pilares de su búsqueda sonora: la grabación de campo, la experimentación electroacústica, la improvisación y el misticismo.
Luego de una fiesta, una noche de verano de 2009 en la escuela de cine, Miguel Caroli queda garante de dos enormes parlantes activos y una guitarra electroacústica. Este sería el detonante para, al día siguiente, preparar todo en su habitación y grabar el disco “naranja”.
Un dato interesante es que al terminar la grabación, Kalayawa se encuentra a las afueras de la habitación a un grupo de compañeros deleitados, estas serían las únicas personas del mundo que han podido disfrutar del disco “Naranja” en vivo, ya que desde entonces Kalayawa interpreta el disco reproduciendo las pistas con técnicas del dub.
SONIDO Y ESTILO
Un efecto de delay síncrono a 120 bpm amalgama la guitarra afinada en RE abierto junto a una voz que va contando el tiempo y las palabras hasta irlas desapareciendo y convertirlas en una nebulosa sonora. Esporádicamente un beat trip hop servirá de gravedad para hacer avanzar el viaje sonoro.

En verano de 2009, el disco fue grabado en una sola toma en la habitación 123 de La Escuela Internacional de Cine y Tv, San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. La grabación fue simple. En un dormitorio con dos parlantes grandes, una laptop y una interfaz de sonido con dos canales, uno para la voz y otro para la guitarra electroacústica.
Posteriormente fueron agregados el charango, las ocarinas, el bajo y los ambientes de sonido. Luego de su lanzamiento digital, 5000 copias del disco fueron impresas en CD por el Centro Nacional del Disco en Venezuela a mediados del año 2010.
La producción, mezcla y mastering fue hecha por Miguel Caroli en Guatire, Venezuela.
LETRAS Y TEMAS
El nombre del EP se basa en el color naranja a través de la luz solar y cómo éste refleja la plenitud y se centra en la búsqueda de la paz, la armonía, la tranquilidad y el equilibrio. El viaje consiste en sincronizar con el tiempo, enamorarse y desilusionarse para luego comenzar la exploración interior. Los textos fueron completamente improvisados y así permanecieron hasta la versión final.

“Naranja” is Kalayawa’s first EP, released on January 3, 2010. It includes 4 tracks with a mix of genres such as Rock, Reggae, Latin, Folk, and World, with a Psychedelic, Trip hop, and Shamanic style. The EP reflects the shaman’s journey during a day and night in the wilderness to elevate consciousness and acquire universal wisdom.
BACKGROUND
“Naranja” is a metaphor for the journey of the Puidei through Cerro Negro in Venezuela. The Puidei or Püddai are the shamans of the Kariña people. They are the beings who possess wisdom and magical power to protect, heal, and divine. But to reveal this wisdom, the Puidei must cross Cerro Negro for a day and a night in the open air. Only then will the secrets of nature be entrusted to them.
This story was learned directly from a Puidei during the filming of the documentary thesis “The river that crosses us” by filmmaker Manuela Blanco in 2009. By this time, Miguel Caroli had defined the pillars of his sound search: field recording, electroacoustic experimentation, improvisation, and mysticism.
After a party, one summer night in 2009 at the film school, Miguel Caroli became the custodian of two huge active speakers and an electroacoustic guitar. This would be the trigger for him to prepare everything in his room the next day and record the EP “naranja.”
An interesting fact is that after finishing the recording, Kalayawa found a group of delighted colleagues outside the room. These would be the only people in the world who have been able to enjoy the “Naranja” EP live since then, as Kalayawa interprets the EP by reproducing the tracks with dub techniques.
SOUND AND STYLE
A synchronous delay effect at 120 bpm amalgamates the guitar tuned in open D along with a voice that counts the time and words until they disappear and turn into a sound nebula. Occasionally, a trip hop beat will serve as gravity to advance the sound journey.

In the summer of 2009, the EP was recorded in a single take in room 123 of the International Film and TV School in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. The recording was simple. In a bedroom with two large speakers, a laptop, and a sound interface with two channels, one for the voice and the other for the electroacoustic guitar. Later, the charango, ocarinas, bass, and sound environments were added.
After its digital release, 5000 copies of the EP were printed on CD by the National Center of the Disc in Venezuela in mid-2010.
Production, mixing, and mastering were done by Miguel Caroli in Guatire, Venezuela.

Dies sollte der Auslöser sein, um am nächsten Tag alles in seinem Zimmer vorzubereiten und das Album “Naranja” aufzunehmen.
Ein interessanter Fakt ist, dass Kalayawa nach Abschluss der Aufnahmen eine Gruppe begeisterter Kollegen vor dem Zimmer fand. Diese wären die einzigen Menschen auf der Welt, die seitdem das Album “Naranja” live genießen konnten, da Kalayawa das Album durch die Wiedergabe der Tracks mit Dub-Techniken interpretiert.

Im Sommer 2009 wurde die EP in einem einzigen Take im Raum 123 der Internationalen Film- und Fernsehschule in San Antonio de los Baños, Kuba, aufgenommen. Die Aufnahme war einfach. In einem Schlafzimmer mit zwei großen Lautsprechern, einem Laptop und einer Klangschittstelle mit zwei Kanälen, einem für die Stimme und einem für die elektroakustische Gitarre.
